Olodum in San Francisco 9.24.10

Funkquarians represented at the Olodum concert at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Fracisco – 9.24.10!   After dancing the whole show, we met up with the group backstage.  Even though some of the drummers didn’t get visa’s into the country, the show was still a sold out audience.   The Palace of Fine Arts has assigned seating for its shows but that didn’t stop the whole audience from standing up from their seats from song #1!  It wasn’t before long that the front of the stage was filled with a sea of dance during the entire performance.

After the show, Funkquarians had a chance to meet up with the crew backstage.  Here below are some of those pictures along with some group shots of the Bay Area dance community that came out to support.

Olodum is an Afro-Brazilian group from Bahia, Brazil. Olodum was founded in 1979 as a bloco afro (African Bloc), a Bahian Carnival association highlighting African heritage and black pride through music, dance theater, and art. From their home city of Salvador da Bahia in Northeast Brazil (often described as the most African city in the Americas), Olodum has dedicated itself to cultural activism in the struggle against racial discrimination and socioeconomic inequality. Olodum takes its name from the Yoruba name for God, Olodumaré.
